The drivers were required to drink at least five shots of whiskey before the race, and the track contained sharp turns and steep drop offs. The Brumley drag races were very illegal and very dangerous. “The Brumley Boys are having a drag race on Friday, out at Devil’s Bend.” Tim said. The two older boys continued talking as they walked.

“We just saw a movie, heading back to the Curtis house now.” “What are you boys out doing?” Tim asked, as they all three started walking. “Hey you two hoodlums!” A voice called out.ĭally and Johnny stopped walking and turned around, seeing Tim Shepard walking towards them. He loved spending time with Dally, just the two of them. Johnny hated the fact that his best friend was in trouble, but he was kinda glad that Pony had gotten grounded. Making Johnny happy was a lot more important to Dally then some party. So he had went with the younger boy, even though he had plans to go to a wild party at Buck’s. He couldn’t stand to see that look on Johnny. Johnny was supposed to have gone with Ponyboy, but the younger boy had mouthed off to Darry a few minutes before they were to leave, so Darry grounded him.ĭally had been there when Darry told Pony he couldn’t go, and he had seen the disappointed look on Johnny’s face. He wanted to thrive in life and to achieve his life goals.Dally and Johnny were walking towards the Curtis house, they had just left the movies. Even though Darry lives in poverty in the hood, he is still motivated to succeed. “And he had given up a lot for Soda and me” (Hinton 184). He was more concerned of the needs of his brothers than himself. However, he gradually proves this characteristic feature during the novel. Selflessness is a trait Darry had from the beginning. Not only is Darry caring but he also gave up the perfect life he could have had so he could raise his brothers. Pony notices that Darry does love him and they both strive for a stronger relationship. “‘Maybe you could be a little neater, huh, little buddy?’” (Hinton 174). Noticing their relationship is delicate, Darry refers to Pony with nicknames, hoping this will help Pony realize he is trying to do better. Darry is determined that Pony excels in school so he can become successful in the way Darry could not. “On school nights I could hardly leave the house” (Hinton 21). He does not realize how much his temper effects Ponyboy. “Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door” (Hinton 58). With ease, he can lose control and things can instantly get out of hand.

These are only a few components of Darry’s personality.Įarly on in this story, Darry has a personality that is not charming. Beginning the novel, he is tough and strict towards his two younger brothers, but nearing the end, he shows his caring and selfless side.
